JIU JITSU (BJJ)

Is jiu-jitsu safe?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a safe and practical martial art. Though mistakes can happen, the fact that it revolves around ground-based wrestling reduces the risk of many injuries. There's no slamming and zero striking.

BJJ is one of the fastest-growing martial arts on the planet, but the success of your jiujitsu journey will rely heavily on the culture of the academy, the instructional methods utilised by your teachers and the quality of your training partners.

We pride ourselves on creating a safe, supportive and family-friendly environment. We do not tolerate any dangerous or aggressive behaviour.

Do I need previous martial arts experience?

No. We all start somewhere. To support you in mastering the art of jiujitsu, we articulate techniques and break down the steps in an easy way. We pay attention to the smallest of details to ensure you execute the foundational techniques properly. Classes are structured to accommodate your learning pace, and our coaches and more experienced BJJ practitioners will assist you along the way.

Am I too old?

The short answer is: "No! There is no right age to start jiujitsu. When you decide to start is the right time. The beauty of the art jiujitsu is that it can be taught at any age and within your unique abilities.

How fit do I need to be?

There is a common misconception that BJJ is only for those already at a certain fitness level. On the contrary, BJJ is for everyone, no matter what type of body composition or fitness level. Starting jiujitsu will help you become fitter.

What should I wear to my first Jiu Jitsu class?

Arrive 15 minutes early wearing a T-shirt and shorts with no pockets or zippers, or compression gear. Ensure you wear shoes to the facility and while using the bathroom, have hair tied back, no loose jewellery, and no nail polish. We'll lend you a gi for your trial period.

Do you have beginner classes?

Yes, beginner classes run on Tuesday at 5 pm and Thursday at 5 pm. Beginners can also join all levels classes where they'll be paired with a coach or higher-ranked belt. Beginners won't spar right away but will do situational drills until the coach thinks you're ready.

Do you have women only classes?

Yes. Our Women Only classes are designed to challenge you both physically and mentally as you learn a new skillset in our safe and non-judgemental environment. Our classes show you the true capabilities of your body as you develop confidence and learn how to defend yourself. You'll love training with like-minded women who will encourage and push you to become your best.

What is the right age for kids to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

The earlier, the better, just like any other sport. At about five years old, kids are mature enough to understand jiujitsu's most basic concepts and execute them. Our kid's classes start at age 5-7 years.

What should my child wear to their first class?

Please bring your child in shorts and a T-shirt. We'll fit them with a gi for their free trial. Ensure they wear shoes, have hair tied back, no jewellery, no nail polish, and pack a water bottle.

Can I stay and watch my kid during class?

Yes, you can stay and watch. But please don't yell out as it can distract the whole class. Let the coaches do the coaching. If you need to leave, ensure we can contact you in case of an emergency.

What happens if my child does not stay on the mat during class?

It's normal for some kids to leave the mat until they feel comfortable. Our coaches will encourage them to come back on, and we ask parents to support this by encouraging their child to get back on the mat.

How often should I train?

Once people sign up for BJJ, they often fall into one of two categories. Some become addicted to BJJ and want to train every day, while others stress because they think they can't come to class enough times per week.

Many factors go into the ideal training frequency, and almost all of them relate to you personally. We recommend you start with a minimum of two sessions per week and build from there.

Jiu-Jitsu, like all martial arts, is a marathon, not a sprint.

Do you offer family discounts or special offers?

Yes, we offer discounts for additional family members. Please ask us directly at info@synergy.com.au.

Recovery Room

What should I bring and wear to my first recovery room session?

Wear comfortable clothing, like swimmers or training gear. Bring a water bottle. We provide towels and ask that you follow recovery room etiquette, such as cleaning up after your session and placing all towels in the baskets before leaving.

What time and temperature should I use the infrared sauna?

For first-timers, we suggest starting at 55°C for 30-45 minutes. Adjust the temperature if needed. If it feels too hot, decrease by 5°C, or if not hot enough after 15 minutes, increase by 5°C. You have the room for one hour. If you have specific needs, chat with our staff.

What temperature is your ice bath?

Our ice bath is set at 4°C with moving water, which prevents forming a thermal layer and ensures consistent temperature throughout the session.

How long should I use the ice bath for?

If new to ice baths, start with cold showers first thing in the morning leading up to your first session to start building some tolerance. Aim for 60 seconds fully submerged on your first try (this may vary from person to person), with a maximum of 3-5 minutes for experienced users. If you want help with your first ice bath, then please let us know.

Should I ice bath after strength training?

It's better to ice bath before strength training or at least four hours after to allow your body’s natural inflammatory response to occur.
